Chest
mid-XVI century
The presence of chests, that is chests imported from the opposite side of the Adriatic should not surprize us, knowing this was a time when Split had been under Venetian rule since 1420. On the other hand, the assaults of the Turkish army, which occasionally besieged the city walls, indicate overseas neighbours and the movement of people and ideas in both directions.
Palaces belonging to the Split nobility, such as the Papalić Palace, became venues for the exchange of humanistic ideas, while interiors were filled with contemporary and decorative furniture. Contrary to the restrained characteristics of the Late Gothic, Lombardic influence, in this example we recognize a Venetian-Tuscan expression.
