Francesco Carrara
A portrait of Francesco Carrara, an archaeologist, historian and ethnographer born in Split in 1812, died in 1854. Honorary Director of the Archaeological Museum of Split, antiques conservator from 1842 to 1853, he was also the Head of Excavations in Split from 1845 to 1849.
Well respected in the scientific circles of mid-century Europe, he used to translate our folklore songs into Italian language and wrote «a comprehensive geographical, natural science, historical and ethnographic description of Dalmatia containing the most accurate representation of folklore costumes» (La Dalmazia descritta con 48 Tavole miniate rapresentanti i principali costumi nazionali), published in Zadar in 1846, one of the most significant books on Dalmatian studies.
