Lazzaro Bastiani,
Madonna and Child
You are standing in front of a painting dating from the second half of the 15th century, which traditionally belonged to the family of Split’s famous writer Marko Marulić. The painting has the shape of a small home altar with two pillars on each side with leaf capitals, the inner ones ending in a pointed late Gothic arch.
Using tempera on wood technique the painting depicts Madonna with her hands clasped and baby Jesus lying in front of her. Mary’s dress is covered with ornaments. Behind Mary there is a blue-green curtain with ivory embroidery, while in the background there is a barely discernible bluish-green hilly landscape.
