Great Papalics palace
today Split City Museum
is the place where the material legacy of the Split history is collected, processed and presented.. The palace of the noble family Papalic, was built during the 15th and the 16th century and certainly is one of the most beautiful Late Gothic palaces of that period. Its construction is connected to the name of Juraj Dalmatinac (George of Dalmatia), one of the most important artists and architects, best known as the creator of the Šibenik cathedral.
The palace, with its monumental façade dominated by picturesque Gothic quadriphore on the first floor, piano nobile, contrasts inside the narrow street. Juraj has left his mark on Papalić palace: the easiest to identify it is through the carved motifs of curved, wind-worn leaves, which can be observed in almost every corner (on the main portal, a small loggia in the courtyard and on the window openings).
