Partisan

The partisan most likely developed from a wide spear called the ox-tongue. Besides a wide and long spearhead it also has stronger or lesser protruding upward curving wings. These side wings were not important in inflicting injury, they were designed for parrying. The partisan emerged in the Italian region, and as of the early 16th century it was widely used throughout Europe. It soon became a parade weapon for denoting officer rank.
